What’s the Role? As an Education Support Teacher, BLV - Social Emotional Learning, you’ll play a key role in delivering targeted social emotional learning support to learners who receive services from APSEA. The EST-SEL also assists families and APSEA employees in implementing best practices around social emotional development for learners with blindness and visual impairment spanning from birth through the transition from school to community.

Day-to-day, the EST - SEL:

-Collaborates with learners, families, APSEA Education Support Teachers and Education Support Specialists and other APSEA employees, school teams, and community agencies with respect to:

-Social Emotional Learning skill development in relation to sensory diversity

-Transition from birth through to the school to community transition process.

-Develops and delivers virtual and in-person educational programs for learners or families regarding social emotional learning as they relate to sensory diversity.

-Engages in professional learning and keeps abreast of current literature to remain knowledgeable in emerging trends.

-Consults with APSEA coordinators, supervisors, and employees concerning Social Emotional Learning needs of learners.

-Supports processes to create a safe, equitable, positive, and supportive learning environment in which diversities are valued.

What You Bring to the Table: You’re not just looking for any job – you’re passionate about education, and you bring a wealth of knowledge and experience.

We are looking for someone who:

Has a Master's degree in education of Learners who are blind or visually impaired, or equivalent
Holds a valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certificate
Is an asset to have a Bachelor or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field.
Brings knowledge of Social Emotional Learning related to visual impairments.
Has knowledge in culturally responsive pedagogy, trauma informed practices, and restorative approaches.
Shows competency to support the Expanded Core Curriculum - BLV
Has experience working with children and youth who are BLV, including those with multiple exceptionalities
Has experience and/or training regarding working with children from infancy to late adolescence.
Has experience with assessment, program planning and delivery of instruction for children and youth who are BLV, including those with additional exceptionalities.
Has experience teaching in a variety of settings (e.g., school, home, virtual, early learning centers, community)
Brings knowledge of the Unified English Braille (UEB) code and the ability to design tactile graphics.
Has the ability to assess, develop, write, implement, and evaluate individualized programs.
Is comfortable with technology and access technology to ensure learners have access to learning opportunities.
Works collaboratively and relates positively to children, families, early learning staff, APSEA staff, administrators, educational team members and community partners.
Demonstrates confidentiality and professionalism with access and distribution of student information.
Shows excellent organizational and time management skills.
Brings excellent interpersonal and English communication skills.
Can work independently with minimal supervision.
Is culturally responsive, understanding the importance of cross-cultural awareness, human rights, and diversity.
Has access to a reliable mode of transportation; may require overnight stays. Regular travel is required.

Would be a plus if you have:

Proficiency in French or an additional language.
American Sign Language (ASL) proficiency.
Training in coaching, mentoring & facilitation.
