The Librarian, under the direction of the Supervisor of Production and Library Services (PALS), initiates and facilitates the workflow and the production of alternate format materials for learners served by APSEA. The Librarian is also responsible for obtaining, circulating, cataloguing, making accessible and storing a collection of educational materials and resources. This individual liaises with a wide variety of clients including APSEA colleagues, learners, and partner agencies.
Being a subject matter expert, the Librarian is responsible for supporting the library onboarding process with education support teachers, coaching the Library Technician(s) team, and working in collaboration with the Supervisor of PALS. This position contributes to the development and implementation of an effective library collection and services, while actively promoting APSEA’s library resources across the organization.
Day-to-day, the librarian:
- Maintains high level knowledge of the library database and catalogue.
- Assists staff and users in navigating the library database and provides clear explanations of library procedures and available services.
- Trains and supports staff on copyright compliance and best practices, with a focus on the use and distribution of educational and alternate format materials.
- Provides clear guidance on the application of the Canadian Copyright Act (including Section 32.1) to ensure staff understand their legal and ethical responsibilities when accessing or sharing resources.
- Establishes and maintains effective organization of materials in the library and other storage areas, and implements changes as required.
- Collaborates with the Supervisor of PALS to effectively manage production timelines and ensure consistent, comprehensive, and effective library services.
- Supports the processing of alternate format requests by validating documentation, identifying appropriate format options, and coordinating production with internal teams and external suppliers.
- Applies accessibility features to digital files, manages digital assets received from publishers and partner libraries
- Catalogues library materials through original and copy cataloguing, following Resource Description and Access (RDA) standards, the Dewey Decimal Classification System, and Library of Congress Subject Headings.
- Sources lowest-cost products and services and reconciles invoices from vendors.
- Troubleshoots and resolves production issues, clarifies atypical requests, and liaises with external producers to resolve outstanding issues.
What you bring to the table:
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library science program.
- Two (2) years' experience working in a library setting.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards.
- Must be able to lift and maneuver items of up to 35 pounds daily, as this role requires physical effort such as standing, packaging goods, and moving library return items.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism with regards to access and distribution of learner information.
- Ability to perform manual and online bibliographic searches.
- Ability to maintain accuracy, pay close attention to detail and proofread with a high degree of accuracy.
- Knowledge of MARC cataloguing, Library of Congress Authorities and Subject Headings, the Dewey Decimal Classification System, and Resource Description and Access (RDA).
- Strong written and oral communication skills with a sound knowledge of business English, punctuation, and spelling.
- Ability to handle routine and repetitive work efficiently while working under pressure.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team of specialists.
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of and practical experience with computers, Internet, and online searching.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills to foster transparent communication and professional relationships with APSEA colleagues.
- Willingness to take UEB (Unified English Braille) courses is an asset, to better understand alternate format production and services.
Would be a plus if you have:
- Previous experience in alternate format library services
- French language skills
