Position Summary

The 0.5 Educational Deaf Interpreter (EDI) is responsible for American Sign Language (ASL) linguistic modelling and support to Deaf signing students, along with facilitating the learning of Deaf culture in various educational settings. The other 0.5 of this position is as an Educational Deaf Interpreter - LSQ (EDI-LSQ). The individual is also responsible for langue des signes québécoise (LSQ) linguistic modelling and support to Deaf signing students, along with facilitating the learning of Deaf culture in various educational settings, and the understanding of how to navigate an environment where French, LSQ, English, and ASL are the predominate languages. 
 
Working with the classroom teacher, Supervisor of Educational Interpreting Services, Education Support Teacher, and Education Support Specialist -ASL, the Educational Deaf Interpreter provides the Deaf student with ASL and LSQ instruction in the classroom and social settings, as well as supporting the student in their learning of the differences between the unique cultures of home and classroom.

This individual brings their lived cultural identity and linguistic knowledge to the classroom; both roles assist to build the necessary linguistic and cultural foundation within the Deaf student. The student needs these skills to successfully navigate a French and English learning environment. 

In conjunction with the educational team, the 0.5 EDI and 0.5 EDI-LSQ works to support the student with the transition from Educational Deaf Interpreter to Educational Interpreter.

Education & Qualifications

  • Lived experience/first voice perspective.
  • Native Fluency in ASL
  • Ability to obtain an ASLPI Rating from Sign Language Institute of Canada (SLIC).
  • Native Fluency in Langue des signes québécoise (LSQ).
  • Rating from EvaLSQ, minimum level of B2
  • Functional literacy in French and English.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Is collaborative when working within a team. 
  • Deaf Interpreter Training is an asset.
  • Follows the standards/criteria laid out by the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI)
  • ASL Instruction Training is an asset.
  • LSQ Instruction Training is an asset.
  • Deaf Adult Literacy Training is an asset.


 Experience      

  • Experience working with children and youth.
  • Early Childhood Education experience and/or diploma is an asset.
  • ASL/English Literacy experience is an asset.
  • LSQ/French Literacy experience is an asset
  • Comfortable working in a virtual learning environment.
  • Deaf Interpreter experience is an asset.
  • Linguistic/translation work.
  • Community support/advocacy work.
  • Residence counselling, summer camp counselling.

Compensation

$30.07 - $39.88 per hour
