Position Overview:   

The Education Support Teacher - BVI delivers instructional programs and consultation in support of children and youth who are blind or visually impaired. This individual works collaboratively as part of the educational team and/or early learning team. This position reports to the Supervisor of Programs – BVI. 

Qualifications and Experience You Bring:   

  • Master’s degree in education of Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired, or equivalent 
  •  Valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certificate 
  • Competency to deliver instructional programs to students who are blind or visually impaired 
  • Competency to teach Unified English Braille
  • Experience working with students who are blind or visually impaired, including those with multiple exceptionalities 
  • Experience and training in early childhood education is an asset 
  • Experience with assessment, program planning and delivery of instruction for students who are blind or visually impaired. 
  • Ability to support programs of learners with diverse learning styles
  • Experience teaching in a variety of settings (e.g., school, home, early learning centers and community) 
  • Experience working in a virtual learning environment 
  • Demonstrated competency in assistive technology for students who are blind or visually impaired 
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and relate positively to children, families, early learning staff, APSEA staff, administrators, educational team members and community partners 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills  
  • Excellent organizational/time management skills  
  • Demonstrated self-initiative and ability to work with limited supervision  
  • Demonstrated confidentiality and professionalism with regard to access and distribution of student information 
  • Culturally responsive with the ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of cross-cultural understanding, human rights and diversity  
  • Strong commitment to professional growth and learning to remain current in the field.  
  • French language skills an asset 
  • Regular travel required: access to a reliable mode of transportation; may require overnight stays.
