Position Details

Reporting to the Directors of Programs - Blind & Visually Impaired (BVI),  the Supervisor of Production and Library Services (PALS) is responsible for the daily provision of quality services within the department of alternate format and library services. The individual oversees departmental operations and is responsible for maintaining a strong, cohesive, and collaborative team. The Supervisor provides proactive leadership and support to employees within the department, with a strong commitment to the organization’s goals of contributing to ongoing professional growth and learner success.

The Supervisor also:

  • Participates in the efficient operation of the department by contributing to the production of materials, addressing technical issues as required, and adhering to cataloguing standards for the classification of specialized, complex, or unique library materials. 
  • Recommends changes or revisions to current practice as necessary and shares this knowledge with colleagues. 
  • Ensures that effective and clear procedures are developed, communicated to employees, implemented appropriately and evaluated as needed. 
  • Works collaboratively with other departments (e.g., Information Technology, Access Technology) to ensure effective and efficient management of resources and materials to meet the needs of learners and employees. 
  • Develops effective relationships with relevant agencies, organizations, and institutions. 
  • Assesses the professional development needs of all Production and Library Services employees and provides continual support to the team. 
  • Contributes to the maximum operating efficiency of the department through the effective management of human and financial resources in collaboration with the Director of Programs. 

Requirements and Qualifications You Bring:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in transcription is required.  
  • Five (5) or more years of relevant work experience in the field of Alternate Format Production and/or Library Services.   
  • Experience in administration and/or leadership positions including the supervision, professional development and management of employees is an asset. 
  • Library Technician Diploma or Library Science Degree is required.  
  • Certification in Unified English Braille (UEB) Transcription through CNIB or equivalent is required.   
  • Working knowledge of software programs that enable the production of alternate format materials. This includes, but is not limited to, braille transcription/translation, optical character recognition and Corel Draw. 
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills. 
  • Ability to proofread with a high degree of accuracy and a strong command of written language and the ability to edit written work.  
  • Excellent communication skills with a sound knowledge of business English, punctuation and spelling. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards.   
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively, productively lead multiple priorities, and work in a team environment alongside APSEA colleagues, educational team members, and other educational partners.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills - a forward focused individual who proactively seeks new knowledge and skills, who looks for opportunities to improve the organization and experience of team members.  
  • Demonstrated typing and word /data processing skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office software.  
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism with regards to access and distribution of learner and employee information. 
  • Comfortable working in a virtual learning environment.   
  • Demonstrated ability in the management of fiscal resources within budget. 
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) is an asset.
  • French Language skills considered an asset. 
  • Ability to apply knowledge, experience, and commitment in the areas of cross-cultural understanding, human rights and diversity.
