Compensation: This is a non-union casual position, but classification is in alignment with the NSGEU/APSEA Collective Agreement
Please note APSEA's typical hours of operation are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm during the workweek (Monday-Friday). This position is providing services on Tuesdays and Thursdays, daytime shifts.

Why Join Us?
Reporting to the Supervisor of Accessibility Services, the American Sign Language (ASL) English Staff Interpreter is responsible for providing ASL English Interpretation in response to organizational interpreting needs coordinated by the Staff Interpreting Coordinator.
This individual provides interpreting services for meetings and presentations of various sizes across departments and the organization.
What you bring to the table:
- Undergraduate Degree or equivalent.
- Graduate of a Sign Language interpreter training program is required.
- A minimum of five (5) years of work experience with ASL English interpreting.
- Flexible hours are required in order to support various assignments scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays, either virtually or in-person at the APSEA Central office, Halifax. Some travel within Nova Scotia is expected and possibly travel to New Brunswick.
- Preferred professional certifications from the following are desirable: CASLI – Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters, RID – Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Canadian Government Translation Bureau, Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), and/or other Interpreter Screenings.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience working within a virtual environment is an asset.
- Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team, with strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to adequately prepare for assignments to ensure the highest quality of services
- This position will be exposed to a high level of sensitive information on a day-to-day basis and therefore it is a requirement to adhere to a recognized Sign Language Interpreter Professional Code of Ethics (for example, CASLI Professional Code of Ethics, RID Code of Ethics)
- Culturally responsive with the ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of cross-cultural understanding, human rights and diversity.
